Legal Question in Traffic Law in Illinois

What is the law in Illinois regarding violating a railroad crossing signal? I received a ticket for this alleged violation, but at the time the lights came on and the bells started to ring, I was already less than a car length away from the gate and would not have been able to stop without the gate coming down on my vehicle. I understand the law regarding railroad crossings as I worked and drove for an oxygen company where I was required to stop at all RR crossings. If I lose in court, according to the rules of the road, I understand the fine is $500 and a 30 day suspension of driving privileges on a first offense. Is this correct? Some suburb web sites indicate the fine is $250 and there is no suspension of a license on the first offense. What is true? I have to believe the judge will automatically believe anything the police says and find me guilty. What, if anything can be done?

Violation of the railroad crossing provision, including driving around lowered crossing gates, will result in a mandatory $500 fine or 50 hours of community service and a one-month suspension of driving privileges for a first offense.

I hope this helps.
