Benefits pay out

My father died in 2003. We received his life insurance benefits but were told by his company ''Field Container'' that because he never changed his beneficiary on his pension/401k etc that they do not pay out. Can this be true? Is it supposed to pay out to the estate?

I cannot think of any circumstance which would allow them to just keep his money. Ask the "field container's" supervisor about this nicely, just once, and then hire an attorney if you do not receive a satisfactory answer.
