Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

Only heir vs live in girlfriend

My dad recently passed away. Him and my mom were divorced and he had lived with his girlfriend for 4 yrs. I am the only child. He had nothing of value just household contents and personal possessions. Maybe $20,000 of stuff. Isn't what he had before they got together legally mine? Can't I get what I want of his things? I just want what he got from our home when him and my mom divorced, things from my childhood. Can she keep me from getting it? I am 19 and can't afford a lawyer. He lived in Illinois, I live in Kentucky.

Re: Only heir vs live in girlfriend

You do have a right to some of those possessions, but you may have to get a Court order to get them. I recommend trying to keep this out of Court and dealing with the girlfriend directly.
