How can an accused seek exemption from personal appearance in court . the complainant has lodged case 1000 km away and it is a big hassle

After receiving the summons, the accused on the date of hearing may present an application for exemption from appearance through his advocate/counsel. However, he has to furnish bail bond by appearing in person on any other date. Best bet would be to appear on the first date, furnish bail bond and apply for permanent exemption through counsel because of long distance
