Hi, I am Geetha Dhandapani. My Father's name is Dhandapani. I recently got married and I dont want to change my initials since it will create confusion in my educational certificates, bank, passport etc. Now, me and my husband, Vijay are planning to buy a house together. I am confused if I can use my name as D. Geetha or if it will create confusion in future about my identity. Is it legal to retain my initials after marriage. Will using my maiden name cause any problem to the property in future. I heard, according to hindu law, the girl's initials changes by default to her husband's. Please clarify me.

There is no need to change name if you dont want. you can reatin your original maiden naem. If you change your name even otherwise it will not create any confusion qua your educational documents. My wife alos retain same name and there is no proble. Cha ge of name is optional and by your own volition. Do not take any headache about it.

It is not compulsory to change ( add to) maiden name upon marriage. While your name is D. Geetha the passport name will obviously have expanded name.
Property if purhcased jointly by you ( or separatelky ) can be in your maiden name. Even a subsequent change of your name does not create any problem about your ownership.
However, before purchasing any property, get a lawyer's opinion of seller's title and also register your sale deeds through a lawyer as it will ensure your rights are protected in such life -time investments.
