Legal Question in Employment Law in India

employment law

I left an organisation and joined a competitor. My first employer now threatens me with a legal case as the appointment letter said that I can not join a competition for 2 years after leaving services.

Does this rule exist in India ? Many people have been doing this on regular basis and my understanding is that the rule in India is not applicable . please suggest
