Legal Question in Business Law in Indiana

fired on the job

I worked as a property manager and one of my tenants was not paying rent and i had to evict her. Well when I evicted her she went to my boss and told him I was taking her rent from her and keeping it myself. This was not true. My boss suspended me with pay. On 1/5/09 he sent a letter around to all the residents stating that I no longer worked there. He never called me to fire me, never got a last paycheck. Now Im trying to find another job. I think he is giving me a bad reference and telling the residents that I was fired. My question is can he tell the residents I was fired and why I was fired.
