If I use a unique symbol resembling the "like" symbol from facebook (thumbs up) to make money will I be at risk of being sued?

Most well known (and some not so well known) advertising and corporate symbols are trademarked. If you use something that is similar you will run the risk of being sued and incurring substantial penalties. You may think your symbol is unique, but in all probability it isn't.
