Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

Mortgage company resusing payment

I was unemployed for the better part of last year. I fell behind on my mortgage as well as other bills. I tried to pay the mortgage company one payment to keep the overall debt down and they refused to take the payment, they said that if I sent a check they would just return it. Now they have turned it over to a lawyer. I have money sitting in the bank and now the lawyer's office is giving me the run around on how to get the bill paid and turned back over to the mortgage company, the whole time the bill id getting bigger and bigger. I am having a hard time paying my other bill for fear that the lawyers fees tacked on will eat all of the money in my account. I am at my wits end with this. Is there anything I can do?

Take some of that money you have in the bank and see an attorney. There are several ideas that come to mind but this is not a good method of getting the facts to decide how to proceed.
