Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

payments on medical bill

My husband has stage 4 cancer. We have quite a few medical bills and all but one of them have accepted the amount we can send. One of them has refused what we can afford. I offered $10.00 a month, but, they said they can't accept less than $25.00. Is this legal? If not, what can I do about it? thank you.

Re: payments on medical bill

Certainly they can refuse to accept the $10.00 payments. If they refuse to accept payments as you have suggested, then your alternative is to make the $25.00 payments (be VERY wary of signing any new paperwork they send you - see a lawyer), or do nothing or file bankruptcy. If you do nothing, eventually they will file a lawsuit to try and collect from you the debt owed. Bankruptcy may be an option for you. Consult with an attorney who does bankrupty work to better determine whether it would be a viable option for you.

Good luck.
