Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

I have a 11 month old son and I am wanting to change his last name from his fathers to mine. We were never married, he has not contacted him in over 8 months, and he is the only family member my son has with that last name. I believe that it would be better for my son to have my last name. He would not be confused as to why his name is the only one that is different, why it is different from mine. I think at a young age it would help him feel a better sense of self and family.

His father as stated has not contacted him in 8 months even though he loves with his mother who does occasionally see my son. He has never paid support (or been asked to) and initiates no converstaion with me.

I am wondering if I need his permission to do this. I know he would be informed and have a chance to fight it but I am wondering if I can go through the motions and fill out the paperwork and file without his consent in the state of Indiana.

if that name is not mentioned any where in the records you can change. if that person is not the father of child y did you insert his name to your son's name? that is my question.any way you can change no problem but whats there in birth certificate? you have not state that if there it is entered then you cant change you have to swear an affidavit that can be done with help of your advocate you can do so.
