child custody-guardianship to grandparents

my daughter and son in law want us to have their 3 children if something would ever happen to them. how do i go about legality? power of attorney? notarized letter that is binding?

I am not sure what you mean by "if something should ever happen to them".

That being said, there should be a clause in their wills setting forth their preference for guardianship. This is not binding on a court when you petition for guardianship. However, their choice is usually honored.
