What exactly is 'emancipation'?

When people use this term, they're generally referring to the point at which the non-custodial parent is no longer obligated to pay child support to the custodial parent because the child has been declared "emancipated."

This can happen as early as age 18, if the child is not enrolled in post-secondary education and is capable of or is supporting him or herself.

The parent has to petition the court for an emancipation to be declared for a child of this age.

Otherwise, the child is automatically emancipated at age 21 and no court action is required.
