Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

My husband has an 8 year old son who lives in Anderson, Indiana. Him and the mother were NEVER MARRIED. 5+ years ago they separated and he became an over the road long distance truck driver. They worked out arrangements for my husband to see his son when he came to Indiana (which was at least once a month) and my husband has always paid her child support every month and the mother has always included my husband with any decisions regarding the boys education, religion, health and any other important decisions. They have no court orders filed they've always worked things out between them. At least that is true up until just recently. They had a falling out and now the mother has notified us telling us that she is not going to allow his son to come and stay with us this summer. We are devastated. We have already purchased airline tickets for him and have planned our vacation time around his visitation time with us. Is there anything we can do? Can we file some kind of legal document that would allow my husband the visitation time with his son?. We live in California and we only have certain times of the year that we can fly him to California to visit with us. We also want to do whatever is necessary in order to prevent this from happening again in the future. Can you please tell us what we have to do. We know this is going to be difficult since we live in California and the child lives in Indiana. We would appreciate any information or advice. Directions on how to proceed or some guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Cari ;Workman
