Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

I left my home because of domestic abuse. The police say I can't return if he doesn't want me to. Is that correct? I have filed for an order of protection and have a hearing on Friday. He is out of town this week, so I went back home because I have been staying in a hotel. He found out i was at the house and called the police. They suggested I leave.

The police are incorrect in my opinion. However, lets be practical. You have a hearing on Friday and can ask for the court to allow you to live in the house without him. In the meantime, since you are in a metropolitan area, you should be able to stay at a domestic violence shelter for free for a few days or longer.
