Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

Medicaid Regulations

The father of my unborn child and I seperated long before I found out I was pregnant and I'm not sure whether or not I'm going to tell him. Though I know that it may be my moral obligation to my son, I know I'm not legally obligated to tell the father. I don't want him around and I don't want financial support from him. After my son is born, however, he will need adequate health care and I plan to apply for Medicaid. I was wondering if I must put the father's name on the application or if there is another option such as N/A, unknown, etc.? But, if I must use his name, what are the implications, (i.e. Will the father be notified? Will it ever come up on any of his records? Will the government ever go after his money? Etc.)?

Re: Medicaid Regulations

You are correct that you have no legal obligation to tell him.

However, you will be forced to reveal his identity if you apply for government benefits.

The rationale is this: Why should your ex get out of the responsibility for taking care of his own child and have the taxpayers pay for it instead?

So, if you want to do this truly on your own, you need to do this truly on your own, without any government aid.

If you do NOT want to do this on your own, you need to have him own up to his responsibility in this.
