Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

I have a four year old son whose biological father is in prison serving a 14yr sentence release date being 2026. I am trying to have my son's last name changed to mine. We were never married, not ever planning on getting back together, and father did sign birth certificate. I'm wanting to do this for my son only because I am concerned for his future in school, work, etc... don't want him asscociated with father's criminal record or name in any way. I have done the petition for change of name and everything else needed. Now the father is trying to get a lawyer while in prison to fight this. Is there anything I can do to prevent getting a lawyer or can i get a court appointed lawyer? I am only in my 20's not sure on what to do next or who to talk to

You cannot stop him from hiring a lawyer. You cannot get a court appointed lawyer. You cannot erase the mistake you made in picking this guy to be your child's father by changing your child's last name.
