Legal Question in Traffic Law in Indiana

2 days ago I recieved a ticket for having plastic over my back window because it was broken out. What I do not understand is earlier this week I had called the police station in the same city I recieved the ticket in to ask if its legal to drive with plastic over my back window and she said her officer told her that as long as the plastic is clear then it is legal. The plastic on my back window was clear. Are they able to ticket me for something that their own police station said I could do?

Unfortunately the answer may be yes. The police cannot give you permission to violate the law. If the officer who gave you an opinion about the law over the phone was mistaken and the officer who gave you a UTT citation is correct then your reliance on the telephone advice would be misplaced. It would be helpful to know exactly under what part of the Indiana Code you were cited; about halfway down the UTT there should be four numbers separated by hyphens or dashes and probably starting with 9-xx-xx-xx. Consider taking your citation and some pictures of your car and car's rear window covered in plastic to an attorney who handles traffic cases for specific advice.
