Heirlooms not part of probate

a family member's estate will go to probate because there was no will. he was not married and the woman he lived has all his things. At what point can the heirs ask the person for family heirlooms we know are in their house and who should request them? An attorney or the heirs?

If these heirlooms were the decedent's property, they are part of probate. The personal administrator has the job of getting the property into the probate estate.
