Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Iowa

We were recently served with papers from the Sheriff stating that we had just had everything taken out of our checking account because of a garnishment. The thing is this originated from a Gateway computer we purchased, which got stolen, over 13 years ago. Gateway evidently sold the debt to this Asset Acceptance company and had a judge sign off on it. One of my questions is that both my wife and my name are on the account and the judgement was just for me. Another thing is that it was signed by the court on Feb. 26th, yet they waited until Friday (payday of course) March 1st to take the money from the account. How can they take every dime you have when you have three children to support?

That's what garnishment is all about. Did you have notice of the debt? Did you respond to the summons or did you let it go to default? Without knowing more about the facts it's hard to say whether it was justified or not.
