Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

Just started divorce

Been separated since Dec 2005, not divorce. Been doing like custody on 2 dogs. One is before marriage.

He's keeping them from me, (my kids), the one before my marriage is getting her hair cut tomorrow. Since proceedings are starting and he won't answer my calls...can I go pick her up at the trimmers place of business? I'm in Iowa. There is another dog...that I have concerns for. My to-be-ex is a drunk and don't really care if these little dogs eat or are left out in a snow storm.
