Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

I have struggled with alcohol addiction for awhile. I'm involved in AA, see a therapist and am actively looking for a sponsor and i am full time student and work part time. I want to continue to live a sober lifestyle. My ex fiance and i have a 17 month old daughter. He wants me to give him full custody. I feel if I went to court the judge would definitely give him full custody. So, do I even try? Can I change the custody agreement later when I have more sobriety time under my belt? I do not want to just hand him my daughter and give him the authority to say when I can see my daughter.

Is there a custody and support agreement on file or anything like it? Is anyone's name besides yours on the birth certificate? You're dealing with the rights and responsibilities that come with parenting a child. The issue is really whether either of you have any custodial legal rights to begin with. That's got to be settled first.
