A double negation is a construction that employs two negatives, especially to express a single negation.

When two negatives are used in one sentence, the negatives are understood to cancel one another and produce a weakened affirmative. However, in Italian, the second negative is usually employed as an intensifier and should be understood as strengthening the negation rather than removing it. That is the reason why the way to replace a double negation in a sentence depends on the context.
