Legal Question in Family Law in Kansas

Back Child Support

Child turned 18 in January, quite school that terminated the future child support obligation. My delemma: it was in arrears already. Owe's $800. that is a lot of money to me. State of Kansas say's that is not enough money for them to get him on contempt. It was being collected through the SRS because of past payment problems. He moved to Mo. over a year ago. How can I get him to pay up when the State won't help? I can't afford to get an lawyer. Is there a statute of limitation on back child support?

Re: Back Child Support

The right of child support, of course, belongs to your child, however, as the residential parent, your have a duty to enforce payment in behalf of your child. Yes, there is a statute of limitations, and you do need to get counsel to enforce payment. I cannot tell you precisely what the time period is after the child reaches age of majority, but you could lose the right for them if you don't act. Good luck.
