Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Kansas

Recently, I was living in chengdu teaching english for a company. While living there, an elderly woman that had been harrasing me for months tried to force her way into my home. I closed the door, locked it, and went to my cell phone to call for help. Minutes later there were angry people knocking on my door. My FAO told me not to answer so i did not. Later, I was told the woman was taken to the hospital. She had a cut on her eye, and some bruising on her bottom. My company was then in touch with my school's FAOs. Later, a rep from my school and I went to the police station with the family to file a report of the situation. We left the police station about 2 hours later. No charges were filed. The police were not interested in the situation at all. My company sent out a rep that arrived about 2 days later. The rep and the family worked up a contract that told me to pay for the hospital bills and punitive damages for assaulting the woman. Again, no charges were filed. The owner of the company stated that the woman was going to ask for money and that I "just agree to what ever amount she asks for, then call your parents and ask them to send you the money." So the woman asked for the equivialant to 10,000 US dollars and demanded it the next day or she would sue. The rep from the company also said I should sign, and then demanded that I give them my passport. When I told them I did not want to sign until I had a lawyer read it and check with the US embassy, they grew very angry and demanded that I sign it now and would not let me leave until i did. I was scared and I signed. That evening I was on a plane to the united states. Now the company is demanding that I pay the money to them. They have sent me an email stating they are in america and filing a suit if I do not pay them. I am unsure of what to do, or what rights and/or obligations are present in my situation.

You need to consult directly with a.c. an attorney in your area

Many offer a free or low cost initial consultation. Give them all the details and documents you are not able to here. Don't agree to sign or pay for anything until you do. Good luck

Don't pay anything. This sounds like a complex scam. In any event, if you are sued in Kansas, you can plead coercion as a defense. Feel free to forward me that email if you want to discuss this further.
