Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Kansas

Audio Home Recording Act of 1992

According to state or federal law, is it legal to make a limited number of copies of copyrighted materials, namely compact discs or cassette tapes or movies, which I have purchased, to give to friends and family?

It is my opinion that what you propose to do is a copyright infringement. You would be exceeding personal use and cutting into potential sales of copyrighted materials. Think about it: if everyone did this, copyright holders would not get paid for their works and there would be no incentive for them to produce them. While the likelihood of you getting caught is probably low, I think the right thing to do is not make the copies and have your family and friends buy their CDs and tapes.
