When it comes to legal matters, what do we need to have to start an online business, selling miscellaneous items within the United States?

There are no "set" legal procedures. It all depends on the type of business, i.e retail v. service, etc, type of product and so on. There are accounting rules everyone must follow, especially if you have employees. There are also tax rules. The first thing to do is to define your business. Various trade groups can give you information. The IRS has many bullitens about types of taxes. If you intend to do business in several states, you will have to be aware of their tax laws and registration requirements. You must do some basic reading, which I do not think that you have done. Then you will be able to ask specific questions. The first experts that I would consult, "face to face" would be a local attorney and then an accountant. You will need to develop a business plan.
