Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Kentucky

If someone moves into an apartment and it is infested with bed bugs and your unaware of this and you have to get rid of our furniture and other belongings. Is the apartment complex held liable to compensate for renters loss?

Possibly. There is not a lot of developed law about the bedbug situation right now, but I would think that if the landlord had knowledge of the infestation and did not take action to eradicate it, then the landlord would be liable. I would make the argument that the infestation is a public health concern and is a violation of URLTA (the Uniform Residential Landlord Tenant Act), if applicable in your city.

If you cannot afford a private attorney, I would consult Legal Aid about the issue, or contact your local bar association for available pro bono or reduced fee services. I would think that Legal Aid should be interested in the development of these matters because of the prominence this issue is taking in multi-family housing establishments, but they don't have the resources to take every case. If your city has any sort of agency that regulates housing, landlord-tenant issues, etc., you should check with them as well.
