Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Kentucky

My son is in a lease with 2 others. The lease started on Aug. 10, 2011. He moved out in Sept. due to one of the roommates getting drunk and getting in his face and cussing him out and calling friends of theirs and calling him names and just making life unbearable. The apartment complex told him that if the other 2 roommates agreed to move to a 2 bedroom apartment then after the first 3 months they would release my son from the lease. The other two did agree and my son has this in writing but now they have changed their minds and want him to pay another months rent to hold the room for another person to move in towards the end of Nov. or first of Dec. My son has talked to 3 different people at the apartment complex and was told the same thing by all 3. Now they say because he hasn't given a written notice he had to pay Nov. rent. Not one of them told him he needed to give written notice when he told them he was moving out. What I want to know is does he have to pay Nov. rent or can he be released from the lease?

He's responsible to the landlord for November rent, provided the terms of the lease agreement require him to pay rent and provide written notice. Depending on what his roommates actually signed, he may be able to recover from them, but he should pay the landlord to avoid any legal action taken against him.
