credit card account sold to collectors agency

hi, i had a credit card account over 9 years ago. it became past due, i was unable to pay it till now. the original amount was $4,000.00. the account has been sold to several different collection agencys and now the collectors are telling me i owe $7,000.00. i want to pay the original debt, but i'm at a loss on what to due. they keep selling my account. please help.

When is the last time you actually made a payment on the account? Last time you used it?

You may not even legally owe the debt anymore.
