Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

Burial of a parent

I am one of six children (three of which were adopted by another family because of his neglect). My father died today, who I have not had contact with since 1989. He was an abusive alcoholic father who my mother divorced when I was 1 year old (I am 40 now). I am being told by the funeral home that we (children) are responsible for his burial. I need to know if I am liable and if I am what are the legalities of donating his body to science?

Re: Burial of a parent

First, I have no clue about donating a body to science. However, if you take that responsibility onto yourself, it may be that you will be agreeing to pay any expenses not only incurred in the donation, but maybe whatever expenses have already been incurred by the funeral home. Second, you are not obligated to pay for the funeral unless you agreed to do it in writing or you opened the succession and accepted it. Burial costs are paid from the succession property.
