Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

Child support and am does this amount that we have to pay fits the guidelines of

What is the age that a child stops receiving child support? If the mother that the child lives with earns $46,000 a year and my husband earns $55,000 a year, about how much will he have to pay? This mother is asking for child support when this child is now 18yrs.old and will graduate in May of 2004. The son was living with us until August of 2003 and we now are giving him $300.00 a month. The mother is asking now for $821.00 a month for both of them. Can she still receive the child support payment $521.00 of for the son, after the daughter graduates, if she doesn't go so before a judge? The hearing officer told us that this was the amount $821.00, that we would have to pay and when the daughter no longer gets child support , the son will then receive $521.00 . We did have an attorney ,but he doesn't seem to be on our side of the game. Please help us in offering your opinion. Thank-you .

The hearing officer's calculation is right on, although there is usually a one month credit for visitation. You owe support until the child turns 18 unless still in high school and then you owe until the child graduates or turns 19, whichever occurs first. There are exceptions which have to do with some mental/physical disabilities. The 821 and 521 are fairly right on with the child support chart. I came up with 828 and 528 using 8,450 as the combined monthly income of the parties, and giving the visitation credit of 1 month, the figures are 759 and 483 respectively. If you have a hearing officer decision, I don't see where your options are.
