Why do we have to file for succession after my father died?

You have to file to let the world know who now owns his property, and more importantly to let the government know whether they have taxes coming. If he had no property, or if all property was movable and all the heirs agree on how it is to be split, then there are ways to avoid opening a succession. If he had life insurance with named beneficiaries, then that does not go into a succession.
