Legal Question in Family Law in Louisiana

Termination of Child Support

If my daughter turns 18 on November 3 and she has not graduated from high school, will I be required to continue paying child support? Also, is termination automatic or must I go back to court to stop the child support?

Re: Termination of Child Support

In the normal case, child support automatically ends 1) Upon the child's 18th birthday or 2) Upon the child's graduation from high school or the child's 19th birthday, whichever occurs first.

NOTE: If you are paying child support for more than one child and you pay a lump sum amount, then you cannot automatically reduce that lump sum amount when one child becomes a major and support is no longer owed for the major.

NOTE 2: If a child has medical problems, especially affecting their mental age, then support for that child may be required for a much longer period.
