Copyright or Trademark infringement?

My wife knitted an afghan. It portrays a particular university mascot and acronym and is done in the schools colors. Can she sell it without being in conflict with copyright or trademark law?

Almost certainly a trademark issue and possibly copyright as well (depending upon the depiction of the mascot), as you plainly suspect. Keep it off eBay or you invite problems; a private sale to some fan is unlikely to come to anyone else's notice....
