Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Louisiana

Lease agreement

I was a college student at tulane who transferred and leased a house in New Orleans with 5 other friends. The owner of the house said that I can lease it to a friend which I did but he never signed a new lease agreement and was writing checks to the owner who accepted them as rent. He was just in a car accident and died. what is my responsibility with the lease? Also she kept my deposit and made him give a security deposit as well.

Re: Lease agreement

Unless the lease was assigned the tenant in effect was your sub-Tenant and you are responsible for any rent shortfall until the end of your lease term.
