If a roommate leaves a piece of furniture in my house for over a year, what are my legal rights as far as keeping it?

Legally, they still own it, even if it has been in your possession for a year. You can acquire legal ownership of movable property, but it takes much longer than a year. Anywhere from 3-10 years of uninterrupted possession, depending on the circumstances.
