My parents died leaving the family home and property to me, an only child. How expensive is it in Louisiana to open a succession and have the property transferred into my name so I can qualify for Homestead Exemption tax benefits?

You have to do a succession on each to have the title pass to you. If the home is the only property and you the only heir, it should be a simple succession. Shop around until you find an attorney you can afford. Court costs such as filing fees, etc can amount to $500 or more.
