Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Louisiana

Custodian for Trust Fund for a Minor

My seven year old son and I were involved in an accident several months ago. I have sole custody of my son. His father pays child support for him. The settlement is now complete on the accident and the money for my son is ready to be placed in the bank. I am being told that the money has to be placed in the bank under his father's name instead of my name. I don't understand how this could be, because the father has never lived with us, he does have visitation rights and he pays his child support, but we were never married and we never lived together. I can understand if the money is placed in a trust fund for my son when he reaches age of muturity, but I don't understand how the money can be placed in the bank under the father's name. If this is the case, then my son or I will not have access to his money, but the father who is not a daily part of his life will hold the custodial over his money.

Please explain and/or send me the Louisiana Law addressing how funds for a minor child is handled.

I appreciate any information you are able to provide me on this matter.
