Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Louisiana

My father just died, he owns a house, boats and cars, but has no will. What can or can't his legal children do with his property?

You need to open a succession. Short of that, the movables that require titles like the cars or boat trailers can be transferred using a form from the Dept. of Public Safety, ie the Drivers' License Bureau. The stuff not requiring titles such as rings etc, can be divided up amongst the heirs. Of course ALL of the above depends on ALL heirs being in perfect agreement. Also, if your dad had debts, creditors have a right to be paid from the property owned by him. If dad was married, then the wife may have some claim to some property of her own right as well. Open a succession, it costs a bit but saves a lot of headaches.

You will need to consult with an attorney. There are a lot of questions that need to be asked (is your mother still living, etc.) before your question can be answered.
