If you receive a personal check from a person or company is there legal right for them to take it back, and if so how long do they have?

I would need more information /facts to give you a specific answer to your question. The answer, unfortunately, is "it depends." It depends on why you received the check -- did you perform a service in return for the check? did you sell the person/company a product and receive a check in return?
