Legal Question in Business Law in Maryland

I wanted to make a game online where I would have an unknown item in a box and have the public pay to guess what's inside of it. The one who is to guess correctly would get a prize of a sum of money through an online transfer. Are there any type of laws being broken at all? Is such a game copyrighted already by someone else or not? Also, what are some considerable issues that could come from doing this?

Gambling (include guessing games, games of chance, etc.) tends to be regulated and online gambling can involve a myriad of laws, including but not limited to licensing and/or registration. As with any business venture in a regulated area it would likely benefit from legal advice.

An online post cannot realistically research copyright or patent information but the question of copyright is a prudent one to ask. Before marketing any product, game or process it is a wise idea to research any associated copyrights, patents and/or trademarks through the United States Patent and Trademark office.

The above offers only general legal information -- the specific facts of your situation may affect how the law applies to you. While I hope this response helps it is neither legal advice nor a substitute for consulting with a lawyer of your choosing.
