Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Maryland

social sec number on envelope

I was in contact w/ a law office who sent me a notice with my SS# printed on the outside front of the envelope next to my name - displayed as : Jane Doe

SS#---------

Isn;t there some law against this? I am in MD.

Yes it is a violation of the Maryland Social Security Privacy Act and civil damages plus attorney's fees are available under the unfair trade practices act. You could also seek an injunction to get them to stop. There are business exceptions but i don't believe they apply to placing the number on the envelope.
