Is it unlawfull for debt collectors to call your place of work if they have been asked not to, or is there legal action that must be taken to stop this harrasment

Once you tell debt collectors to stop calling, they have to do so or they are in violation of the Fair Debt Collections Act. As a result, you can sue entities who violate the Act.

However, there is an issue of proof. In some state, for instance, you can secretly tape record conversations (1. the conversation telling them to stop and 2. all calls thereafter). Unfortunately, as shown in the Linda Tripp fiasco, Maryland prohibts secret recordings.

There are other ways to prove violations, including having third parties on the call and using a phone that records the telephone number of all calls. To avoid blocked numbers, you can set your phone to reject those calls.
