Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

i attemped to use a fake id to buy beer and was denied. on the way home my friend was pulled over, and the cop asked for all of our id's. when i gave him my real id he asked me what i was just doing trying to buy beer and to hand over my fake id. i told him i didnt have one. after ten minutes or so asked me again to admitt to it and that if i didnt he would take me to the store i tried to buy beer from and get the story from them, and then it would be alot worse for me. so i gave him my fake and he charged me with a civil citation for possesing fictitious drivers license. was what he did legal and i have had friends tell me you can do community service for your first offense to get the charges dropped and avoid trial. is this true?

Possibly. What individual assistant state's attorneys will offer in specific cases varies. It also depends on the particular charge and the defendant's record.
