Legal Question in Criminal Law in Maryland

Theft in the workplace need Help Please

Ok so I recently admitted to stealing merchandise from my job. I told my store manager, who said he would keep it between he and I, but i found out about an hour later he was getting statements from the rest of the employees in the building! I called my district manager and told him what i had done and said i wanted to meet him to discuss things. Now i want to give the money i took back to the company and quit but i want to cover my ass at the same time. My 1st question is if they had cameras in the building and the employees werent notified they were being monitered would that be illegal on their behalf? 2nd Question If i officially quit when i talk to my district manager, in the future when another job does a background check will they be allowed to say i was terminated for theft? My big dillemia is that if the company does have cameras im screwed, if its illegal for them to have cameras AND NOT INFORM ME then i would be golden right? What if they try to blackmail me into getting others in trouble is that illegal on their behalf? I would appreciate a response from all who read this my meeting with my D.M. is tomorrow and i really want to give them their money and go home and not worry about this ever again.

Cameras in a public place are permissible. Even if you quit your job, the employer can still report that you stole merchandise from them.
