My friend had a DUI in the state of nj 4years ago...he was recently stopped in the state of Maryland and has a pending court date. Does Nj have recipricocity with Maryland and what kind of penalty maybe involved if he is convicted?

The maximum penalties are 1 year and $1000 for a first offense, 2 years and $2000 for a second offense, and 3 years and $3000 for a third offense. DUI also carries 12 points with the MVA and at a hearing the driver's license may be revoked.

If you are asking whether MD will know about the NJ conviction, the answer is probably, but it depends. And if the State can prove a prior, the penalties may increase. Also the likely penalty could vary widely from county to county. It could be anywhere from a suspended sentence to several days or weeks in jail. You should have him consult an experienced DUI attorney to provide more detailed information.
