Common Law Marriage

Is common law marraige legal in Maryland?

I have been with my partner for 22 years, consistently, and have 2 children by him. I have recently been told that CLM in not legal in Maryland, please Advise, thanks.

You were informed correctly. Common law marriage is not recognized in Maryland.

Common law marriages cannot be created in Maryland. However, MD will recognize a common law marriage that was created in another state. So if you lived for instance in DC where common law marriages can be created, and then later moved to MD, MD may recognize your marriage.
