My ex-wife and I have agreed to modify our child custody agreement and to extend her use of the martial home. Can we file papers ourselves?

You can, but if you want a well written agreement that might require enforcement and court interpretation in the future, it would be in your best interest to let an experienced family attorney draw up the new agreement. If you are now operating under an agreement that is part of a court order, you'll need court approval of any new agreement since it involves the interests of the children. I've prepared many of these such agreements.
