Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Iam a 32 year old married mother of four. I have 2 kids with my husband and 2 prior. We live in Maryland and I am seeking a divorce. My husband has filed a custody petion against me. We are still living in the same house but I want to leave with all of my kids! Should I hire a lawyer for the hearing scheduled on may 1, 2013 or can I represent myself and show the mediator how he is mentally and verbally abusive to me? I have videos to prove this abuse.

It is never a good idea to go to court without good legal representation, especially when the important issues you raised are involved. If you hire a lawyer now he/she will be able to use the time before the hearing to properly prepare for that hearing and future steps in the case. As an example, the fact that your husband may be abusive to you will not be the focus of a hearing on custody; what will be is what is in the best interest of the children. If there are financial issues you may qualify for a lawyer at a reduced fee through your county bar association.
